Teddy Bear Learning Activities for Preschool
Teddy bears are one of the most beloved toys in early childhood. They are comforting, familiar, and perfect for learning through play. A teddy bear theme is a wonderful way to help preschoolers practice important early skills while keeping activities fun and engaging.
Whether you are teaching in a classroom, homeschooling, or simply looking for creative learning ideas at home, these teddy bear learning activities will help build early math, literacy, and fine motor skills.
Teddy Bear Literacy Activities
Teddy bears make wonderful learning companions when practicing early reading skills.
Try these simple literacy ideas:
Teddy Bear Alphabet Hunt
Hide alphabet letters around the room and have children help their teddy bears find them. When they find a letter, say the letter name and sound together.
Beginning Sound Sorting
Place objects or picture cards in a basket and ask children to sort the items by beginning sound. For example, a bear might collect objects that begin with B.
Teddy Bear Story Time
Invite children to bring their teddy bears to reading time. Ask questions like:
- What do you think the teddy bear in the story is feeling?
- What would your teddy bear do next?
This helps build listening comprehension and storytelling skills.
Teddy Bear Math Activities
Preschoolers love counting and sorting activities, especially when teddy bears are involved.
Count the Teddy Bears
Place small teddy bears or bear counters on the table and have children count them. You can also match the number of bears to number cards.
Teddy Bear Sorting
Sort teddy bears by:
- color
- size
- type (soft bears, plastic bears, pictures of bears)
Sorting builds early math and classification skills.
Feed the Teddy Bear
Cut out a large teddy bear face and make a mouth opening. Children can “feed” the bear pom-poms or counters while counting each one aloud.
Preschoolers love hands-on counting activities, especially when they involve play.
I created a simple Feed the Teddy Bear Counting Activity that children can use to practice counting from 1–10 while feeding treats to a teddy bear.

You can find these in the Freebie Vault.
Teddy Bear Fine Motor Activities
Fine motor practice is important for developing the hand strength needed for writing.
Teddy Bear Lacing Cards
Children can lace around the edges of a teddy bear card to practice coordination and concentration.
Lacing cards are a wonderful way to help preschoolers build hand strength and coordination while having fun.
I created some Teddy Bear Lacing Cards that children can lace with yarn or string while practicing fine motor skills.

You can find these in the Freebie Vault.
Dress the Teddy Bear
Use small pieces of felt or paper clothing to dress a teddy bear. Picking up and placing small pieces helps strengthen little fingers.
Teddy Bear Play Dough Mats
Let children create teddy bears with play dough. They can roll small balls for ears, noses, and paws.
The Teddy Bear Playdough Mat lets children use playdough to create and decorate a teddy bear while practicing fine motor skills.

Teddy Bear Pretend Play
Pretend play encourages creativity and social skills.
Try setting up a Teddy Bear Picnic learning center.
Children can:
- count teddy bears
- serve pretend food
- practice sharing and conversation
- sort food items for their bears
You can extend the activity by having children help plan the picnic.
