Triple Crochet Sweater

If you like vintage baby patterns like I do, I think you’ll like this sweater set I’ve decided to work on. It’s from a Doreen publication in 1945. Since it had no gauge and only stated it was for size “infants”, I was not really sure what size it was actually for.

So, I decided to crochet it up refiguring it for today’s sizing and materials so that I could share it with others who might be interested in making it also.

Their material requirements were to use a size 1-Bone #4 hook. I chose to use a size E crochet hook (3.5mm).

They also used 4 ounces of 3-ply baby yarn. Since it wasn’t specified, I chose to use Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn in the color Blueberry.

My gauge was done in dc, 19 sts per 4″; 11 rows per 4″.

My size 6-9 months.

Starting at the lower back yoke, ch 60.

Row 1: Dc in third ch from hook, dc in each of the remaining ch sts. Ch 3 and turn. (57 sts).

Rows 2-10: Sc in each st across, ch 1 and turn.

Row 11: Sc in each st across, Ch 3 and turn.

Row 12: Dc in next 16 sts; ch 14 sts for neck edge. Turn.

Row 13: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each remaining 11 chs; dc in next 16 sts, dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3 and turn.

Rows 14-22: Dc in each st across. Ch 3 and turn. (28 sts)

Fasten off after row 22.

For the second front yoke, ch 11. Dc in 17th st (counting from the armhole edge) and dc in next 16 sts. Ch 3 and turn. (28)

Row 1: Dc in each st across row and in the 11 chs.

Rows 2-10: Sc in each st across, ch 1 and turn.

Row 11: Sc in each st across, ch 3 and turn.

Row 12: Dc in next 16 sts; ch 14 sts for neck edge. Turn.

Row 13: Dc in third ch from hook and in each remaining 11 chs; dc in next 16 sts, dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3 and turn.

Rows 14-22: Dc in each st across. Ch 3 and turn. (28)

Fasten off after row 22.

Time to make the body of the sweater. Tie yarn at front edge and working across the first front: ch 7, sc in second dc. *Ch 5, skip 1 st, sc in next st*, repeat from * to * across front (14 loops). Ch 5, sc in first dc on back yoke; repeat from * to * across back (28 loops). Ch 5, sc first st on front of yoke. Repeat from * to * across second front yoke (13 loops). Ch 6 and turn.

Row 1: Dc in first st, *ch 3, dc in next loop*; repeat from * to * across row (57 spaces). Ch 4 and turn.

Row 2: 4 dc in first st; *ch 1, skip 1 sp, 5 dc in next sp*, repeat from * to * across row (29 dc groups). Ch 4 and turn.

Row 3: Holding back the last loop of each tr on hook, tr in next 2 dc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made); ch 1, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook, tr in same place as last tr; tr in next 2 dc, complete cluster as before (twin cluster made), ch 2, make a cluster over the next 3 dc*, repeat from * to * across row. Ch 8 and turn.

Row 4: *Sc in next space, ch 5*; repeat from * to * across row ending with sc in last space (57 loops). Ch 6 and turn.

Work in this pattern until the piece measures 6 inches from the yoke, ending with the fourth row of the pattern. Fasten off.

Now to make the sleeves. Tie yarn at the underarm edge (in center of ch 5), ch 5, sc in side of first dc row on armhole, *ch 5, sc in side of next dc row on armhole*; repeat from * to * around (23 loops). Ch 6 and turn.

Work in same pattern as body until the sleeve measures 5 inches from the armhole, ending with the fourth row of the pattern. (NOTE: You will have 23 spaces and 12 dc groups). Fasten off. Sew up sleeve. Repeat for the other sleeve.

To finish the sweater, cut 2 lenghs of satin ribbon about 6″ long. Tie each one at the first loop on each side of the yoke to create the ribbon tie.

Cut two 10″ lengths of ribbon for the sleeves. Thread each ribbon through the third row of pattern at bottom of sleeve.
